Tsunami Bomb - I had to do this interview while I was at a barbecue. If Dominic wasn't such a good talker, you would have been able to tell that I was drunk and had to piss like a racehorse.
Strung Out - I'm glad that my best cover story was in our fifth anniversary issue. Didn't they do a great job on the cover?(May '02)
No Use For a Name - This was the cover story for the Warped Tour Issue. I had to do this interview over an e-mail because someone threw our shitty speaker phone out the day before the interview was scheduled! But Tony was a really cool guy and very cooperative. (June '02)
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Talking to Dicky Barret was by far one of the most uncomfortable interviews I have ever conducted. I didn't have their press packet, I didn't have their new c.d., and right up until I had to call him, I didn't have any questions. He was nice to give us an interview, but jesus christ did he ever want it to be over with! I'm sorry, Dicky... (July '02)
Student Rick - Cheer up emo boys. An impromptu interview with a band I'd never heard of results in me writing a cover story basically about my incompetance. (March '02)
The Dickies - Stan Lee is a man of few words. Obviously my first interview.(July '01)
Good Riddance - Interviewing the very serious and very political Russ Rankin of Good Riddance was nervewracking. Has anyone ever tried to make him laugh? I did. It was pretty damn difficult. (August '01)
Tilt - I don't know how I managed to wring an article out of this interview with Cinder Block. We didn't speak until after I could take a Yellowjacket and pound a few beers. We talked about the worms on her floor and stuff. (December '01/January '02)
The Lawrence Arms - A very cool three-piece punk band from Chicago. (February '02)
World's Greatest Jobs: Playstation 2 Game Tester - I interviewed Jabari Sims, a guy that tests video games for a living. Couldn't write this article without uncovering the truth behind video-gaming's couterpart, drugs. This article pissed some people off. (Sep. '01)
Reviews
- Rave Review: In R' Circle underground - The first and last review I ever did on a rave. My editor thought it should be called "The Time I Did Drugs with my Boyfriend in L.A." I didn't want people to know I wrote it, so I used the pen name "gEarl Grey." The review provoked one hate message to be left on the No Cover answering machine for me. (Sept. '01)
- San Diego Street Scene: the XM Radio Electronica stage - I saw DJ Dara, Mixmaster Mike and Bad Boy Bill at Street Scene last year. After Bad Boy Bill's set, I was granted an interview with the Chicago house dj, but his publicist is a fucking asshole and it never happened. I was too stoned to review any other stage at Street Scene. This is one of my least favorite articles. (October '01)
- Movie Reviews with a Gentle Touch: Seamless - My first and last review on a movie. It was the only movie that was incredibly, unrepentently horrible enough to inspire to talk so much shit. This is my favorite review, for the same reason.
- Incubus - Review of their show at UCSD's Rimac Arena, November 28, 2001.
Miscellaneous
- Monkey Business - My introductory article and the first piece I ever wrote for the magazine. There's a moral in it.
Oh shit, whaddya know. I have a bulletin board.
